The Centre for Earth Observation (CEO) programme of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre has published an invitation to tender relating to the implementation of the catalogue interoperability experiment, based on existing demonstration software. The CEO is now in its design and implementation, phase which is planned to run from 1996 to 1998. The enabling services component of the CEO programme aims at providing software and systems to increase the exchange and accessibility of meta-data and information about Earth Observation data, products and services. The enabling services will make use of the catalogue interoperability protocol (CIP) to make data from a number of Earth Observation archives available, in a coherent manner, to the users. Following the release A of the CIP specification, the CEO has implemented a demonstrator software with the intent of testing critical issues and acquiring experience in the multiple connections of remote catalogues. It is now planned to use the implemented demonstrator software to interconnect a sample set of data catalogues and to initiate the population of the enabling services via CIP. Work should be completed in 1997/98, on dates laid down in the tender specifications.
