Navigating digital libraries
To help librarians, archivists, scholars, technicians and museum curators navigate through digital libraries, a Digital library competence centre has been set up in Pisa, Italy, as a result of the European project called A Digital Library Competence Centre. The centre provides the user groups having access to advanced digital library services, with expertise and training that will allow them to understand and use these new technologies. The objective of the training course on collaborative working in a digital library environment (Digital library based collaboration) is to demonstrate new ways in which digital libraries - collections of documents and associated services - can facilitate collaboration within and between user groups. The course is targeted at librarians, archivists, scholars and technicians and offers direct experience of advanced experimental platforms on digital libraries. The training is free of charge, but registration is requested and only ten participants are accepted per course. The ultimate aim of the course is to facilitate open access to digital libraries and efficient dissemination of content. Digital libraries are a great tool providing European citizens with access to an unlimited amount of, for example, scientific and cultural information and knowledge. However, in order for everybody to make the most out of the digital collections, they need to be globally connected. Appropriate training for this purpose is provided by the courses organised by the Digital library competence centre.
