Advancing future active document systems

A test bed for the development and evaluation of future active document systems has been developed.

It is estimated that all the information found on the web will be fused together into active components. Hence, these active components are destined to replace documents, desktops and browsers as we know them. Consequently, the information society is in need of a consistent composition technology that has the ability to compile active components strongly and effortlessly with the ability to integrate standard components. The goal was to design a foundation for this type of composition technology and then present it in a web-based composition centre. The Minerva framework functions as a test bed for the evolution and evaluation of future document systems. The flexible technology is based on component-oriented precepts in order for arbitrary data types to be easily embedded into documents. This characteristic is particularly of value with documents that may be used for an extended period of time. The technology can integrate new components even in the case that slight changes need to be made in the requirements. Minerva provides refined mechanisms that can help developers to actualise non-linear navigation as well as annotation management. In short, it can function as a foundation for next generation active document systems.
