The Road Transport Telematics High Level Group, set up by the European Commission in 1995, has published its final report on the activities of the EU in the field of road transport telematics. The report provides an inventory of the achievements and on-going initiatives, at European level, in the field of road transport telematics. It is intended to assist in the identification of areas and applications to be investigated as priorities for the future, as well as of the barriers for their implementation. It also constitutes the basis for the future work of the Group and will direct the updating of the Group's work programme and organization (creation of new Working Groups). EU achievements and on-going activities in the Road transport telematics sector are summarized in the following main areas: - Demand management, traffic operation and control; - Travel and traffic information; - Tolling, electronic payment and booking; - Commercial vehicle operations; - Collective transport services; - Advanced vehicle safety systems; - Common functions and horizontal support actions. The report includes an evaluation of existing transport telematics applications and services at EU level and at national level (The Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and the United Kingdom).
