Managing bathymetry data online

Web enabled software tools for managing bathymetry data have been designed.

Coastal management has arranged human intervention activities for the protection of the coast and for economic reasons as well. Thus, novel tools and procedures have yielded maps of the bathymetry and other environmental parameters for assessing coastal status. These efforts will aid in the security in shipping, lessening risk of accidents, detecting oil pollution and protecting coastal waters as a food supply source. OROMA, a team of six developers and four end users has converted scientific based knowledge into the most actual thematic information distributed via electronic network. Web enabled tools with numerous functions that refer to bathymetry data have been designed. The tool can describe and present the data. Some of the other functions include a presentation of isolines, the calculation of sediment accretion/erosion in a selected period and an interactive 3D presentation of bathymetry for a given instant The portal is of a three-tierarchitecture and has three functional packages: the Oracle Spatial data reader module, the data presentation module and the analysis module. Data analysis is executed through a server and only the results are sent via web to the client. This helps to minimise network traffic. All data is kept in the Oracle Spatial format, which conforms to the requirements of the OpenGIS Consortium. The software products can be extended to organisations that keep 3D data in corporate databases (Oracle) and who wish to publish this information on Internet. The members are interested in developing tools for additional collaboration with partners using Oracle's leading edge technologies.
