Managing grazed grassland biodiversity online
In order to maintain and enhance biodiverse grasslands, sustainable grazing management practices were identified through extensive research. The effects of management system and animal breed on botanical, structural and invertebrate biodiversity were quantified and the socio-economic costs were evaluated via integrated investigations in various countries. One of the many outcomes of this extensive research was that of a compilation of a web resident European database of research related to the management of biodiverse grasslands. In particular, the database emphasised the role of grazing animal type and of management intensity. The most impressive feature of the database is the fact that it draws together all of the research results into a user-friendly structure. It has an interactive keyword search facility as well as an author or organisation search option. Furthermore, the database makes up a section of the project website that also provides links to the partners' direct project results and contact details. The database is available publicly and is well suited for various organisations interested in the results. These include ecological research organisations, public and private extension services, policy makers and organisations representing farmers, conservation managers and public landowners. It can serve as a valuable resource for such organisations to collect information that can extend beyond the immediate issues addressed. This could also allow improved recommendations for the integrated management of biodiverse grasslands.
