Smarter education for continuance learners

The ever-changing face of employment is rapidly developing into a quagmire for continuance learners wishing to find the best programme and the most appropriate course material. The sheer abundance of education facilities and the courses offered is daunting enough, and in many cases may simply overwhelm candidates.

New technology providing a 'node-link' service between educational institutions just might prove to be the "Google" of education search features. The ELENA project has come up with a software solution "Smart Space for Learning" (SS4L) that aims to facilitate information by providing a detailed overview of educational services available. Through the ELENA project that established a network of heterogeneous systems based on their interoperability communication platforms, SS4L serves as an intelligent mediation service through a Personalised learning assistant. The assistant also serves as the interface whereby education providers can upload their offers on the network. The three prongs to this technology aims to ensure an open the interface between content and heterogeneous systems, giving intelligent support to learners and effective learning for individuals. The variety of services established in the ELENA project such as interactive content, video conferencing, "smart spaces" for learning etc, provides the backbone of education. This benefits both the employee and the employer. For the latter, the benefits are considerable, as the technology enhances business value of its employees, by addressing their training needs and the economies of scale. Moreover, it facilitates the Human Resources department in that it is able to provide further education pertinent to the companies' needs. The SS4L in this regard, also assists the HR departments in that it comes with feature-rich applications suited to HR needs such as evaluation, budget and course management. There is furthermore, a feature called the HCD Suite that helps the HR department in ensuring all participants have constant access to the correct training material in order to further optimise their own performance. Currently, the developers are looking for further research and development support and would welcome participants to help develop the ELENA project further in relation to specific applications such as the HCD Suite.
