Virtual reality for innovative learning

A novel software tool for employing 3D content in shared virtual spaces could have potentially useful applications in the fields of education, e-learning, collaborative training and entertainment.

The LAB@FUTURE project focused on realising the essential info-structure for mobile and wireless interaction in addressing the constructivist theory of learning. According to this theory, learners 'construct' their own knowledge in a more active way than by transmitting knowledge from one to another. This approach involves problem-solving and critical thinking through collaborative learning and activity orientation, where learners test ideas on the basis of their prior knowledge and experience. Addressing these innovative learning concepts, the LAB@FUTURE project built suitable technologies. These include mechatronic systems, augmented reality interfaces, shared distributed virtual environments, mobile technologies, Internet middleware methods and tools. Designed experiments include social aspects found in real life (environmental awareness) or conditions and physical phenomena that may be difficult to reconstruct (water pollution). A key project result was the multi-user server within the LAB@FUTURE project's platform, a module, which is responsible for synchronisation of the 3D content of experiments among multiple users. Acting as a transmitter and re-transmitter of information, it uses 3D content that is redistributable in its virtual reality modelling language (VRML) format. It serves both as an informal communication channel and the front-end to the 3D-powered experiments. The end-user server allows organisation of multi-user sessions for 3D online content in VRML format. Collaboration is sought with Web3D programmers expected to be able to develop 3D content in VRML format, workable with the multi-user server. For further information click at:
