Greek school networks adopt IPv6

IPv6 has been adapted in the Greek school network as a means to offer practical solutions for obtaining services in remote sites.

The 6NET project consists of thirty-one project partners from research and industrial organisations aiming to deploy and test IPV6 in realistic conditions. As Europe's largest Internet research project, it provides a native IPv6 network for test and demonstration purposes on a global scale. Under its auspices, IPv6 was deployed in the Greek school network in order to replace the NAT scheme previously used for sites connected to the GSN. NAT was initially used because IP addresses were unavailable and it allowed the connection to 5000 sites across Greece. Since that time NAT has become problematic when attempting to provide certain services such as teleconferencing to remote sites. Thus, certain actions needed to be taken. A transition strategy for the transformation of GSN IPv4-only network to a dual stack (IPv4/IPv6) network had to be found. IPv6 needed to be deployed in the distribution network, ensuring smooth operation of the infrastructure. Schools to be included were then selected. The schools chosen already had ADSL connections since they were the most suitable for initial testing. Finally, certain services needed to be changed in order to become IPv6 aware.
