Statistics in Focus - Human resources in science and technology
The European Commission's Statistical Office (EUROSTAT) has published the latest in its series of "Statistics in Focus: Research and development in the EU" bulletins. The latest issue, the second of 1997, looks at human resources in science and technology in the EU. The bulletin is based on a pilot study, which was used to evaluate data collection methods for statistics on human resources in science and technology. The data contained in the bulletin examines the levels of employment in the science and technology sector, and then analyses levels of education among the workforce, both overall and within scientific sectors. The bulletin then looks at breakdowns of scientific personnel by age group, and by area of employment, both within and outside the scientific sector. In addition, the study measures unemployment among scientific personnel. Studies of this type will be used to measure mobility among personnel in the sector. However, the bulletin notes that there is still considerable work to be done in acquiring more detailed knowledge of the data.
