Integrated systems for safer roads

The EC's transport policy for 2010 set new targets for reducing the number of fatalities from road accidents. The challenge was met by the EASIS project, which has developed ground-breaking road safety technology.

Current safety systems are mainly stand-alone systems with only limited interdependence. If new safety targets are to be met these systems must be combined with the latest enhanced telematic services to provide a network of integrated safety systems (ISS). The EASIS project made significant improvements to road safety by combining active and passive systems in vehicles that exchange information with other road users and the road infrastructure. The aim of the consortium was to develop the required ISS by designing a highly reliable in-vehicle electronic architecture using an adapted system engineering approach. The project provided a software platform for building future applications and developing cost-effective hardware that can support the needs of the ISS. Researchers also studied and adopted techniques for handling the development lifecycle. Furthermore, a new engineering process and a suitable tool chain were designed, allowing the use of integrated safety systems. The success of EASIS is not just limited to improving road safety throughout the EU. The project will also strengthen the competitiveness of the European automotive industry in the field of vehicle electronics and safety functions.
