Strategic shift to intermodal transport

An in-depth analysis of intermodal transport chains provides a synergistic means to shift freight transport away from European roadways – a good move for the environment.

Everyone would like to see an improvement in European roadways. In an effort to alleviate traffic congestion and environmental pollution brought about by road freight transport, measures are being taken to shift to intermodal transport, namely rail and waterways. Such measures require coordinated support and promotion. The main goal of the Promit project is to enhance rapid improvement and implementation of inter-modal transport technologies by promoting best practices and innovation to users. Intermodal transport often falls short in meeting market demands such as frequency, flexibility and reliability, not to mention overcoming operational and service related barriers. Various organisational and business models operating within transport chains were examined to compile an inventory of best practice cases and intermodal transport solutions. Both technical aspects and organisational detail were included in the analysis. A primary example was the in-depth study of the Stora Enso north European transport supply system (NETSS) which exhibits state-of-the-art measures for carrying all cargo via road. ICT applications are a key element outlining most aspects of transport. These applications span a broad range of services such as tracking, tracing of cargo, fleet management, electronic administration procedures, advanced navigation and communication and intermodal door-to-door management. Taking into account national incentives, services and best practices has provided strategic support to end users to make the shift from road to rail and waterways more efficient. This will contribute to a more sustainable and effective transport network for Europe.
