The dramatic increase in car ownership combined the advent of satellite-related technologies, like the one used for the now-famous Global Positioning System (GPS), have sky rocketed interest in this field of research.

The Position project was funded under the EU's Fifth Framework Programme , however, its overarching principles remain relevant. Its aim was to bring together, and create synergies between research laboratories and companies working on precision positioning technologies across Europe. The provision of information on vehicle position is gaining increasing attention not only as a 'cure' for congestion but also for the solutions brought forth to the delivery of goods, toll charges and other areas. The project consortium sought to provide support to those projects that could most benefit from it. By mapping research activities within the positioning technology arena, they managed to select 14 projects for further support. In addition, a website was used for dissemination purposes relaying Position's activities and updates as well as scientific information. In addition to these activities, Position proactively participated in numerous scientific events. Within these events, Position showcased the work and results of a number of different projects. The overall impact of the Position was to plant the seed for close cooperation within the positioning technology arena and the transport industry as a whole, leading to improved infrastructures for information provision.
