The VULCANUS programme, run by the European Commission in cooperation with the Japanese Ministry for Industry and International Trade (MITI), provides Japanese students with placements in European industry. The Commission is currently seeking offers from European companies interested in hosting Japanese students for the 1997/1998 programme. Japanese students participating in the programme first complete four months of language training, as well as two weeks of European studies, before taking up their placement with the host company. The placements last for eight months, from August 1998 to March 1999. Students will be matched to interested companies before leaving Japan, on the basis of their studies and experiences. Companies interested in hosting a student need not have any prior connection with Japan. The aim of the programme is to stimulate cooperation and improve understanding between the EU and Japan. The students selected to participate in the programme will, in future, occupy senior positions in Japanese industry or government.
