Boosting Turkey's research potential

Agricultural research in Turkey stands to benefit from a number of recommendations made following a detailed analysis of its leading governmental institute.

One way that Turkey can realise its full potential in research is to extend its cooperation with the European Union, but challenges remain to achieving full integration with the European Research Area (ERA). EU funding was used to assess Turkey's Aegean Agricultural Research Institute (AARI). Founded in 1963, the AARI works to develop the country's agricultural capacity with a focus on sustainability. It is responsible for maintaining Turkey's unique plant biodiversity, including its National Gene Bank. An analysis of the AARI's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) has been performed and a relevant action plan developed. The primary finding was that both the AARI's material and intellectual resources must be bolstered in order to compete successfully at the international level. One way in which the AARI can gain valuable experience and acquire knowledge is by participating in the ERA's framework programmes. In fact, it has been recommended that AARI start by applying for a 'Regional potential' (Regpot) grant. Finally, the AARI is also looking to expand its collaboration with other organisations involved in agricultural research both inside and outside Turkey.
