Empowering innovative transport management
The 'Supervised implementation of sustainable urban transport concepts' (Transpower) project was established to create a forum for smaller and medium-sized European towns and cities to address problems related to sustainable urban mobility. The project brought together partners from across Europe to support relevant policymakers in the exchange of know-how and experience with academia and business. The consortium inspired dialogue on the effects of sustainable mobility solutions and how to realise a paradigm shift in urban mobility. This was supported and extended by assisting projects in seven countries to implement sustainable, cost-effective and environmentally friendly urban transport concepts. Project activities focused on public transport, integrated planning, traffic management, non-motorised transport and mobility management. %The cities studied during the course of the project were Groningen, the Netherlands; Graz, Austria; L'Aquila, Italy; Niš, Serbia; Sibiu, Romania; Skopje, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM); Volos, Greece; municipality of Halandri, Greece; and the municipality of Timisoara, Romania. Groningen, regarded a pioneer in the development of sustainable transport policy, contributed to the project primarily as an advisor for cities that have a long road ahead of them towards transport innovation. All cities contributed to the setting up of a database intended to enable assessment of each project city's status of transport infrastructures, services and policies.
