Low-cost cameras for process control and fault detection

Process control and fault detection in automated assembly machines is typically accomplished by numerous and often expensive sensors whose setup and programming is quite time consuming. EU-funded researchers provided a low-cost alternative that has the potential to significantly enhance the competitiveness of numerous European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing field.

Researchers supported by EU funding of the ‘Cameras as multifunctional sensors for automated processes’ (Multisens) project set out to develop a smart camera combined with an image processing unit that would significantly reduce the cost and time involved in process control and fault detection. Achieving this stands to provide a significant boost to the competitiveness of approximately 135,000 European SMEs. Image processing and analysis (IPA) algorithms were implemented for high speed analysis of moving objects. In addition, the team developed methods for visual interpretation of image sequences that tested and validated the vehicle-borne laser scanning (VBLS) approach. Investigators further developed compound logical sensors (CLSs) to process the output of VBLS. The Multisens project delivered a smart camera and processing unit that visually interpreted image sequences of automated processes, reported malfunctions and facilitated achievement of appropriate sequences of events. Eliminating the need for multiple expensive sensors and the associated setup time, the project outcome should enhance the opportunities for business development on the part of thousands of European manufacturing SMEs.
