Lithuanian food network supports European research

Food scientists, research institutes and business came together to create a food quality and safety network for Lithuania.

The 'Lithuanian network on food quality and safety' (LIT-NFQS) project was an EU-funded Specific Support Action (SSA) that helped to integrate food quality and safety into business and industry. The initiative’s main objective was to establish a food quality network for the Baltic nation, together with ties to European food quality research centres. Specific support actions led to improvements in the areas of food safety, food quality control, and new production processes and devices. Project activities included training, awareness raising and the preparation of proposals. In addition, national and European partners from both industry and academia established platforms and new centres of excellence. The LIT-NFQS initiative made a significant contribution to the European Research Area (ERA), whose role is to integrate the scientific resources of the EU. The project’s success will help both Lithuania and the EU to compete more effectively in the global marketplace by providing food that is both of a high quality and safe.
