EU science seeks out South Africa
Ranked as the largest economy in Africa and boasting a strong history in scientific developments, South Africa has much to give and even more to gain through collaboration with the EU. The EU-funded project 'European - South Africa science and technology advancement programme' (Esastap) established a platform to further bilateral and multilateral cooperation between Europe and the notable African nation. The platform worked on upgrading science and technology partnerships and networks by bringing institutions and scientists closer together. It identified priorities in the field and opened doors for economic growth, with the aim of improving living standards. Established under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), the project successfully highlighted to EU Member States the initiatives and excellence in the field that have emerged from South Africa. Overall, Esastap increased participation of South African stakeholders in EU initiatives and effectively raised awareness regarding mechanisms of cooperation. This included the establishment of a website to encourage expert mobility between both parts of the world, an initiative which also included a database to enhance partnerships. Promotion of the project's objectives was achieved through publication of brochures, posters, audiovisual presentations, online activities and by organising competitions for young scientists. The result has been a myriad of new, solid partnerships that have opened up a dynamic part of the world.
