The European Commission, DG XI, has published two invitations to tender concerning the definition of existing and future requirements for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities in Central European countries. The two separate studies to be carried out concern Hungary, Poland and Slovenia, and the Czech and Slovak Republics. The present invitations to tender are a republication of previous invitations to tender which were cancelled for procedural reasons. The objective of the studies is to establish the technical conditions and requirements for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities in these countries. The results obtained should be useful in helping to prepare later assistance projects. As part of the study, it will be necessary to establish a rough estimation of waste quantities produced by dismantling. Some criteria to distinguish between waste easily suitable for clearance after decontamination, waste suitable for on-surface disposal and waste requiring deep geological disposal will be required. The study, which must be conducted in close cooperation with the Commission, must be completed within 12 months of signature of the contract. The relevant tender documentation may be requested from: European Commission DG XI - Environment, nuclear safety and civil protection Mr. B.
