Tunisia has undergone major changes recently, and the EU has helped support the country's economy. One such measure is strengthening the role of Tunisian research centres in the ERA. In this light, the EU-funded project 'European Tunisian cooperation' (ETC) established a network of Tunisian research centres, academic institutions, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). ETC also proposed activities to further cooperation, such as meetings, conferences and events, as well as workshops on preparing research proposals and managing research projects. A key project activity has also been to reinforce National Contact Points (NCPs) to cover topics such as information technology, nanotechnology, energy, health, bio-economy, socioeconomic sciences and international cooperation. In parallel, the project documented relevant laboratories, SMEs and other key players in the sector, establishing a mailing list of over 3 000 researchers and contacts. In effect, the project helped promote innovation and technological development, strengthening international cooperation through different means. It created a powerful online web platform and virtual community that gathers research entities, private companies and independent consultants within one database. The website provides information on EU programmes and funding, identifying key priorities in science and technology cooperation between the EU and Tunisia. ETC has also furthered the transfer of knowledge and skills in science and technology, disseminating best practices to strengthen international cooperation. In this respect, the project website has facilitated data collection, enabled Tunisian researchers to find suitable European partners and helped gain access to EU funding programmes. These achievements have been made possible also thanks to several training workshops, web seminars and events that have supported Tunisian researchers and stakeholders. The benefits from this budding collaboration will undoubtedly support the Tunisian research landscape and enrich the ERA.
