Creating more experts in nuclear waste management

Nuclear power today represents about 30 % of Europe's total energy production. It is therefore essential to improve and extend expertise and scientific competence in the field of radioactive waste disposal.

The objective of the EU-funded ʹTowards an European training market and professional qualification in geological disposalʹ (PETRUS II) project was to ensure the continuation, renewal and improvement of professional skills in the field of geological disposal. The project's outcomes were built on those of the first PETRUS project. Specifically, PETRUS II aimed to enable present and future professionals of radioactive waste management in Europe to follow a training programme on geological disposal. Having been accredited and tested, the programme was to be widely recognised across Europe and access to a combination of education, continuous learning, professional development and in-job learning is offered. Resources for these education and training programmes were inventoried and a dataset for creating formative courses in geological disposal was developed. The project also allowed the delivery of 120 hours per year of specialised common courses in geological science. In addition, a validation strategy was developed for the programme in order to find the best structure applicable to geological disposal specifically. By increasing the quality and quantity of human resources in geological disposal, the PETRUS II programmes are set to have an invaluable impact on the future of radioactive waste management.
