Anthropogammetrical measuring (body counter) for Euratom staff
The Euratom Safeguards Directorateof the European Commission has published an invitation to tender concerning measuring in the field of sanitary physics for nuclear inspectors of the Directorate. With inspectors faced with the potential risk of radioisotope-intake, regular monitoring in accordance with the rules of science and technology is required. Among the existing measures, so-called body counter measuring is generally applied in research centres and in the nuclear industry. The checks must include the following two measures: - i) Overall measuring: representative measuring of the whole body with the aim of identifying any gamma transmitters and including as reference potassium 40; - ii) Measuring of lungs: specific measures with the aim of identifying plutonium deposited in the lungs. This may be carried out by indirect measuring (determining of americium). The number of people who will undergo these checks will be between 240 and 270 per year. A precise schedule will be drawn up by joint agreement. The successful contractor will also have to carry out unforeseen emergency measuring which may be required following any accidents or incidents. The results of the measures must be submitted within four weeks of the tests. If the results are positive, security control will be informed immediately (at the latest five days after measuring). Contracts will initially be concluded for one year, with the possibility of renewal for further one-year periods up to a maximum of three years.
