Microwave technology to improve diagnostics

EU-funded scientists succeeded in developing radar prototypes, systems and techniques that could eventually lead to more advanced imaging systems for security, surveillance, subsurface prospecting and medical applications.

Electromagnetic radiation in the microwave wavelength region that has evolved from radars to evaluate hidden objects has been used in a variety of applications. These include non-destructive testing and evaluation, medical imaging, concealed weapon detection at security check points, structural health monitoring and geophysical investigations, and through-wall imaging. The EU-funded project AMISS (Active and passive microwaves for security and subsurface imaging) developed new systems and sensors for both active and passive microwave imaging. Scientists succeeded in designing antennae for a diverse range of applications, such as radar and subsurface purposes, as well as an advanced microwave tomographic approach for through-wall imaging. Other project achievements include innovative data processing approaches for ground-penetrating radar systems and a holographic radar for detecting concealed objects. Moreover, bioradar prototypes were developed that can be used for detecting vital signs and characterising human beings in complex scenarios for security and biomedical applications. The project helped create and improve existing links between researchers at different institutes via exchange visits, workshops, conferences and journal preparation. Researchers contributed to 14 journal papers, a book chapter, 30 proceedings, abstracts and presentations in more than 10 international conferences.
