In July 1997 the Commission approved the setting up of eight Scientific Committees in the field of consumer health and food safety. Following a call for expressions of interest concerning membership of these Committees (OJ No C 233 of 1.8.1997 p. 3), 131 leading scientists from across Europe have now been nominated. These Committees will advise the Commission in questions such as food safety, animal nutrition, animal health and animal welfare, veterinary public health, plants, cosmetic and other non-food consumer products, toxicity and ecotoxicity and the environment, medicinal products and medical devices. Committee members were selected from over 1,126 candidatures presented by biologists, doctors, veterinary doctors, toxicologists, chemists, food specialists and other scientists active in the field of consumer health. They come from all 15 Member States and from Norway and Israel. The setting up of these eight Committees and the nomination of Committee members form a major part of the reorganization of the Commission's scientific advisory system in this area in the wake of the BSE crisis. The eight Committees will be coordinated by a Scientific Steering Committee nominated in July 1997. Each Committee will meet regularly (on average about ten times a year) with the first meetings scheduled for between 10 and 21 November 1997. In order to ensure maximum transparency, the agenda, minutes and opinions of the scientific committees will systematically be made available on the EUROPA WWW server, at: http://europa.eu.int/en/comm/spc/spc.html
