A half-day workshop on accessing culture through new digital ecology will be held in Vienna, Austria, on 2 December 1998. The workshop will take place during the EU's annual conference and exhibition on Information Society Technologies (IST'98) and will aim to encourage partnerships between cultural organisations and industrial and private-sector actors.

Discussions will focus on issues such as enabling technologies for providing and managing digital content, infrastructures for developing new forms of access for the citizen and alliances needed to exploit these resources fully and creatively.

The topics to be delivered during the keynote presentations of the conference will cover:

- The digital ecology: enabling digital libraries and virtual museums;
- The bright future of 'lightweight' editors;
- Challenges for digital preservation;
- Virtual museums of information technologies;
- Networking cultural services to the citizen: interoperability, metadata, new services;
- Adding value to content and services: exploitation and alliances.
