IST 98, the EU's annual conference and exhibition on Information Society Technologies, will be held in Vienna, Austria, from 30 November to 2 December 1998. The event, organized jointly under the EU's Advanced Communication Technologies and Services (ACTS), Information Technologies (ESPRIT) and the Telematics Applications research programmes, supersedes the series of European Information Technologies Conferences (EITC).

The main sessions will address the theme "Living and working in the Information Society". As well as looking at the impact of the developing Information Society on living and working, for example through improving mobility or by means of electronic commerce, the conference will also look at how new technologies can empower individuals and give them new ways to enjoy themselves.

A key event will be the introduction and presentation of the Commission's new "Information Society Technologies" (IST) programme, which will form a major component of the planned Fifth RTD Framework Programme, due to be launched for the end of 1998. The IST programme will bring together the current programmes, ACTS, ESPRIT and the Telematics Applications programmes, to provide a single integrated programme that reflects the convergence of information processing, communications and media technologies.

The parallel exhibition will present leading-edge technologies and products stemming from these EU programmes, plus demonstration and technology transfer actions. The exhibition will also feature a "Meeting Austria" zone and a series of Central and Eastern European showpoints. An Investment Forum - by invitation only - will introduce venture capitalists to selected high-technology SMEs.

The 1998 European IT Prizes (see RTD-NEWS RCN 9608) will be presented at the conference by European Commission President, Jacques Santer, and the Austrian Chancellor, Viktor Klima. The finalists' entries will be on display in the exhibition throughout the conference. The conference will also present the NET@DAYS EUROPE initiative which was launched in 1997 and aims to promote the connection of schools to the Internet.

The EuroPrix MultiMediaArt 98 Gala (see RTD-News RCN 10231) will take place in Vienna on 29 November 1998, the day before IST 98. The INFO2000/MLIS conference will also take place on 29 November 1998, providing a round-up of the activities of the EU's multimedia content and Multilingual Information Society programmes.
