A workshop on standards for information interchange will be held in Vienna, Austria, on 2 December 1998, during the EU's Information Society Technologies annual conference and exhibition. The workshop will be organised within the EU's multiannual programme for the development of multimedia content (INFO2000), and will discuss the many, varying standards that exist in the domain of information interchange.

The first session of the workshop will be devoted to publishing standards and will explore the role of the different types of standards outputs, and the strategies of the different types of providers. The need for an independent information source on standards and specifications, and the requirements of the different types of users will also be assessed.

Session two of the workshop will address the issue of standards for open information interchange. In this context the following topics will be presented:

- Europe and global interoperability;
- Integrating electronic applications - a vendor's perspective;
- Integrating electronic applications - a user's perspective;
- Standardisation requirements for secure on-line payments;
- Rights licensing and trading - the future of electronic copyright management systems;
- Advertising, publishing and adding value.
