The Commission of the European Communities will hold a Conference on "European Business and the Environment: The Future" in the Borschette Conference Centre, Brussels, 19-20 November, for an invited audience of some 250 business leaders from throughout Europe, together with officials from the Member States and the European Commission.

The two-day Conference aims to provide an opportunity for high-level debate on a broad range of environmental issues of crucial importance to the future success of European business in the Single Market.

Central topics are to be: Improving efficiency and reducing business costs; the growing market for environmental technology and services; and satisfying the environmental demands of consumers and corporate consumers. Discussions with groups representing the public, and with lenders and investors, are also on the agenda.

The Conference will end by looking forward at possible developments in the Community's industrial and environmental policies, including efforts to ensure the uniform implementation of environmental legislation in Europe.

Speakers and chairmen include His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, Commissioner Karel Van Miert responsible for the Environment, Nuclear Safety and Civil Protection, the UK Secretary of State for the Environment, the German Minister for the Environment plus senior businessmen and political leaders.
