Improving profits and safety in process industries in Europe will be the theme of the first meeting hosted by the European Core User Interest Group in Programmable Safety Related Systems, the CUIG.

The CUIG is holding the event on 23 February 1999 in Runcorn, Cheshire, in the UK to give an opportunity for those industries involved in managing safety and implementing modern technologies to benefit from the CUIG work programme and technology transfer activities.

The CUIG is supported by the European Commission under the Esprit Programme in the Fourth Framework Programme. It look for ways in which programmable safety systems can make the process industry more profitable and at the same time safer.

The European process industry contributes almost half of Europe's manufacturing wealth. World sales for safety-related systems within this industry are projected to be 200 billion ECU by the year 2000.

Since its formation twelve months ago, the CUIG has focused on three key issues; conformity assessment and certification, risk and cost modelling and information and management.

The dissemination symposium will comprise:

- CUIG working group achievements;
- CUIG Member Projects;
- Workshop; and,
- CUIG - "The way forward".

The conference will be followed by the CUIG's two-day Spring '99 meeting.
