The European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) is gathering together experts from the international world of science and technology to present the research activities of the Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration (RTD) on 18 and 19 March 1999 at Ispra, Italy.

They will also discuss the future role of the JRC in underpinning European competitiveness, enhancing sustainability, and serving the citizen.

Joined together at one site for the first time, the eight different Institutes of the JRC will discuss and present their research work in different areas. On exhibit will be research on:

- Food quality and protecting health;
- Nuclear cancer therapies (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy);
- Detecting and monitoring natural and man-made hazards, water and air pollution;
- Space applications;
- Challenges for science and technology in Europe and the Euratom programme - research and development of safeguard actions.

By highlighting its role as the interface between European policy-makers and the world of science and technology, the JRC aims to forge collaborative links with key European research and development institutions. The JRC recognizes the need to establish a channel of communication between European legislators and industry and to ensure the transfer of technology to industry, so that the fruits of the research carried out can be used for the benefit of all.
