A symposium on the prospects for plant proteins in food will be held in Munich on 10 and 11 June 1999, when experts from the Fraunhofer Institute, Europe and the USA will meet and give presentations on new methods for processing seeds and an overview of new protein products for use in food products and related areas

Plant proteins are important components of many processed foods. Animal protein is already being partly substituted by plant-protein products recovered from oil seeds and from starch containing plants, such as wheat and peas.

Specific market developments and innovative approaches to seed cultivation will be demonstrated at the symposium as interesting perspectives for custom-made proteins.

The event will be divided into three main components:

- Plant cultivation and genetic engineering;
- Seed processing technology;
- New protein products.

The symposium is aimed at companies involved in plant cultivation, molecular biology, seed processing and the food industry.

Participants will also be informed about the current emphasis on research by the European Union and will have the opportunity to visit the Fraunhofer IVV pilot-plant. Frauhofer IVV is hoping to promote the exchange of ideas and information between different industrial sectors at the event.
