The twenty-second annual international retrieval ACM-SIGIR conference on research and development in information will be held in Berkeley, California, from 15 to 19 August 1999.

The event, SIGIR '99, is supported by the Association for Computing Machinery ACM, and SIGIR - the special interest group on information retrieval. It is the major international forum for the presentation of new research results in information retrieval and for the demonstration of new systems and techniques.

A broad range of professionals including theoreticians, developers, publishers, researchers, educators and designers of systems, interfaces, information bases and related applications are expected to attend.

Topics to be addressed include user interaction and IR; multimedia IR; speech information retrieval; latent semantic indexing; collaborative filtering; multilingual IR; automated summarisation; user interfaces and phrases; efficiency and scalability; distributed IR; probabilistic retrieval and text categorisation and clustering.
