Cartilage damage is a widespread problem. The European research project HydroZONES is working on novel implants to provide relieve for more than 151 million people worldwide who suffer from osteoarthritis, five million people in Germany alone.
Scientists from ten different countries are developing implants from hydrogel that most closely match the multilayer structure of their native counterparts. These should aide the body to permanently fix cartilage defects in joints: these innovative implants made of hydrogel will be degraded over time to the same extent to which new cartilage tissue is being built by the body.
The study was launched in January 2013, and runs for five years. This research project is funded by the EC with almost ten million euros and coordinated by Prof. Jürgen Groll from the University Hospital in Würzburg, Germany.
