A workshop on research and technological cooperation opportunities for the surface treatment sector will be held at the International Welding Fair in Essen from 19 to 22 September 1993 (the workshop will be held on 20 September 1993). The CRAFT scheme (Cooperative Research Action for Technology) of the EC BRITE/EURAM programme is providing financial support and technical assistance and the workshop is organized by the Euro Info Centre at ZENIT GmbH in conjunction with the Euro Info Centres of the Chambers of Commerce of Milano (Italy) and Lyon (France). The workshop is also supported by Deutscher Verband fuer Schweisstechnik e.V. (DVS) (Dusseldorf) and Arbeitsgemeinschaft Industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen e.V. (AIF) (Koln).

The objectives of the workshop are:
- To provide an up-to-date overview of research topics in the field of surface treatment technologies;
- To establish personal contacts between the participants in order to tackle common R&D problems;
- To present the CRAFT scheme.

In preparation for the workshop, the organizers have identified relevant research subjects and project proposals and four key aspects have been selected as topics for the workshop:
- New developments in laser and plasma welding;
- Trends in automation of welding and cutting processes;
- Welding, cutting and heat treatment of new materials and alloys;
- New trends in surface treatment.
