The "European Week of Scientific Culture" is the first Europe-wide initiative of its kind. Seeking to emphasize and reinvigorate the relationships between Science and Culture, the "European Week" includes many related events scheduled to take place throughout Europe during 22-27 November 1993.

It's objective is to extend general understanding of science, and knowledge of science topics, among decision makers and the European public. The aim is to emphasize the important place science and technology holds as part of the European cultural heritage, and to encourage thought on scientific issues among non-specialists, invite wider participation, stimulate cultural debate, and to create a greater awareness of the issues raised by advances in science and technology. A further aim is to revitalize science subjects at all levels of education, so that the career of technician, engineer or researcher is given a much more positive image, to attract the quantity and quality of RTD staff required to meet Europe's growing needs.

Open days, conferences, exhibitions, special TV broadcasts and other media presentations will take place in different European countries during the week. These events include:

- Industry and science education (conference in Utrecht on how industry may improve public understanding of science);

- "The power behind the flower" (open days and presentation of plant biotechnology research results in four European laboratories in Koeln, Birmingham, Valencia, Lisboa);
