A conference on the "New energy realities in the Black Sea region" will take place in Greece on 30-31 May 1994. The conference is being organised by the Directorate General for Energy, DG XVII, of the European Commission.

The conference is designed to promote the establishment of common energy sector programmes among the countries of the Black Sea region, according to the principles set out in the European Energy charter. The charter is intended to promote conditions for cooperation in energy-related matters between the European Union and the rest of Europe.

The Conference is policy-oriented and therefore targeted at ministerial level and it is intended that the agreements reached will be of a political rather than a technical nature.

The conference is not only directed at the Black Sea countries and their neighbours, but also at the Member States of the EU and the international institutions and private firms which determine the investment in the region.

A series of panel discussions and meeting will be organized at the completion of the conference with a view to the preparation of proposals for action and cooperation at the highest level.
