Final of sixth EU contest for young scientists
The contest is part of the Community's Human Capital and Mobility programme (1990-1994). It aims to promote the ideals of cooperation and interchange between young scientists and to provide a stimulus for the development of promising young scientific talent. By organizing the contest, the EU hopes to strengthen the efforts made in each Member State to attract young people to a career in science, technology, research and development.
This year, some 80 finalists, aged 15 to 20, were selected for the final. Representing 17 different countries, they are the winners of national contests organized in the participating countries (the EU Member States, Austria, Norway, Switzerland, Finland and Sweden), in which more than 10,000 young people took part. In addition, young people from Hungary, the United States and Ukraine were invited this year to participate as guest scientists.
An exhibition will display the finalists' projects. They cover a wide range of scientific areas, in particular mathematics (e.g. a research method for primary numbers), robotics, information technology (e.g. a Braille printer), ecology, "clean" technologies (e.g. a study on the purification of waste water) and sociology (e.g. the needs of young people in an urban environment).
There are 12 prizes to be won, six of ECU 5,000 and six of ECU 3,000. The jury will also select young scientists to represent the Community at the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar, which takes place during the Nobel Prize week, and the International Science and Engineering Fair in the United States.
Next year's contest will take place on 11-13 September 1995 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the United Kingdom.
