An event entitled 'Diabetes and obesity' will take place from 13 to 16 September 2012 in Heidelberg, Germany.

Metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome and their complications (arteriosclerosis, diabetic nephropathy or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) have become endemic in most industrialised nations. Projections suggest increasingly unmet patient needs and an unsustainable challenge for current healthcare systems.

Simultaneously, drug research and development are facing obstacles in spite of increased knowledge in biology and chemistry worldwide. Finding new and effective drugs seems be a growing challenge, especially because of stricter criteria for safety and novelty. The number of pharmaceutical companies who are able to conduct expensive late stage clinical trials is declining, funding for academic laboratories and biotechnology operations is limited and novel strategies are needed to treat diseases.

The event will bring together established experts, physicians and researchers to discuss novel therapeutic strategies for diabetes, obesity and other issues such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. For further information, please visit: http://www.embo-embl-symposia.org/symposia/2012/EES12-05/index.html
