An international conference on "Architectures and design methods for balanced automation systems", BASYS '95, will take place in Vitoria, Brazil, on 24-26 July 1995. The conference is sponsored by the European Commission, in the context of exploratory collaborative projects financed by the Economic Commission for Latin America (CIMIS.net and FlexSys projects).

The conference aims to present and discuss approaches to architectures and design methods for balanced levels of automation, taking into account the social and economic context of automation. Particular topics will include:

- Strategies for migration from legacy systems;
- Modelling and evaluation techniques for manufacturing systems;
- Integrated information systems and standards;
- Architectures for systems integration;
- Federated architectures;
- Design methods for manufacturing systems;
- Implantation and migration techniques;
- Computer-aided business;
- Anthropocentric approaches;
- Quality management issues;
- Industrial experiences.

International cooperative research and development activities will also be discussed.
