BASYS'96, an international conference on architectural and design methods for balanced automation systems, will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, on 17-19 June 1996. The conference is financed by DG III (Industry) of the European Commission, under its initiative for long-term research, training and scientific relations with Latin America.

The aim of this event is to provide a forum for presentation and discussion of results and approaches to architectures and design methods for balanced (ie. appropriate) levels of automation, taking into account the social and economic context of their use. Special emphasis is placed on the strategies for migration from legacy systems. Discussion and presentation of international cooperative research and development projects are also an important part of the conference programme.

Much international effort is carried out in the area of integrated and intelligent manufacturing systems, with special emphasis on topics such as information integration, integrating infrastructures, standards and reference models, intelligent computer aided tools, etc. Most initiatives, however, point to high degrees of automation rarely compatible either with the reality of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and/or with the social situation and the growing level of unemployment in developing countries. This event intends to address this issue in an international context.

BASYS'96 follows on from BASYS'95 which was held in Vitoria, Brazil. The success of the previous conference has led to proposals to transform BASYS into a periodic event. The Proceedings of BASYS'95, "Balanced Automation Systems - Architectures and Design Methods", are available from the publishers, Chapman and Hall (UK), at a price of UK£60.00 (ISBN 0 412 72200 3).
