The first Mediterranean Basin Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Spectrochemistry will be held in Cordoba, Spain, on 5-10 November 1995. The conference is sponsored by the Community's specific programme in the field of standards, measurement and testing (SMT) (1994-1998) and will include a presentation of this programme.

The aims of the conference are:

- To promote collaboration among analytical scientists, particularly from the Mediterranean region;
- To promote opportunities for young scientists in the Mediterranean region to attend international meetings, training workshops and short courses on new techniques in analytical chemistry and establish new links for research in or with developed countries;
- To stimulate the progress of analytical chemistry as a whole by solving analytical problems affecting the Mediterranean Basin.

The conference will also include a training course for doctoral and post-doctoral students on the theme "Quality assurance for chemical analysis". This course will make specific reference to the SMT programme, with a particular emphasis on the use of certified reference materials.
