A conference entitled "Technological progress for competitivity and employment: the case of energy and the environment" will be held in Paris, France, on 1 December 1995.

The conference, which is being organized jointly by the European Commission (DG XII) and the "Centre d'Observation Economique" in Paris, will cover the following topics:

- Technology helping the economy to confront environmental challenges;
- New technologies for the environment and macroeconomic consequences of environmental policies;
- Voluntary agreements and their impact on economic growth, technological progress and environmental protection;
- The market in pollutant permits and its impact on the economy, energy and the environment;
- Support to innovation technology in the energy field;
- Fiscal instruments.

The conference will also include a round table discussion with representatives from large companies (Elf Aquitaine, Total, Rhone Poulenc, EDF, etc.) and from large public organisms (OCDE, ANVAR, ADEME, CNRS, INESTENE).
