The conference entitled "Technological progress for competitiveness and employment: the case of energy and the environment" which was scheduled to be held in Paris, France, on 1 December 1995 had to be postponed due to the strikes affecting France at that time. It will now be held on 14 June 1996, in Paris, France.

The conference, which is being organized jointly by the European Commission (DG XII) and the "Centre d'Observation Economique" in Paris, will cover the following topics:

- Technology helping the economy to confront environmental challenges;
- New technologies for the environment and macroeconomic consequences of environmental policies;
- Voluntary agreements and their impact on economic growth, technological progress and environmental protection;
- The market in pollutant permits and its impact on the economy, energy and the environment;
- Support to innovation technology in the energy field;
- Fiscal instruments.

The conference will also include a round table discussion with representatives from large companies (Elf Aquitaine, Total, Rhone Poulenc, EDF, etc.) and from large public organizations (OCDE, ANVAR, ADEME, CNRS, INESTENE).
