EU Advanced Practical Workshop on Biotechnology

A European Union advanced practical workshop on biotechnology, entitled "Molecular tools for biodiversity", will be held in Bristol, UK, on 15-29 April 1996. The workshop is being organized by scientists from the biotechnology project on molecular genetic screening tools, supported by EU's specific RTD programme on biotechnology under the Third Framework Programme for research and technological development. Scientists from Perkin Elmer and Keygene will also participate.

The 14-day workshop will include a three-day basic course, a rest day and a ten-day advanced practical course. The basic course will comprise lectures and demonstrations covering the theories underlying the investigation of biodiversity using molecular techniques. The advanced course will be a practical, hands-on workshop, supplemented by discussion periods and seminars. Methodologies to be covered will include:

- Experimental design;
- Sample collection, preservation and manipulation;
- RAPDs;
- AFLPs;
- Microsatellites;
- PCR-RFLPs;
- PCR-sequencing;
- Use of conserved primers;
- Data analysis.
