A "Special Day" on "Pan-European cooperation and technology transfer" will take place in Zakopane, Poland, on 28 August 1996. This event, which is being organized by the Silesian Technical University (Poland), with the support of the European Commission, will consist of two sessions on cooperation, a panel discussion and a session on technology transfer.

The first session, "Cooperation perspectives", will give a concise introduction to the research and technology development programmes of the European Union, reviewing their underlying principles, objectives and contents, as well as their operational characteristics. Methodological and technical issues essential for European collaborative research will be emphasized.

The following session, "Cooperation in practice", will be based on submitted papers that discuss experience of collaborative projects run under ESPRIT, TEMPUS, COPERNICUS, COST and other European programmes.

The panel discussion, entitled "INTERNET-based cooperation beyond electronic mail", will investigate how collaboration could be improved thanks to advanced applications of Internet.

The technology transfer session, "Techno-park - a stimulative environment for transferring research results to industry", will focus on the ways of positively exploiting synergy between research and industry.

Persons wishing to propose papers for this event are asked to submit their reports (up to eight pages, in English) before 4 May 1996. All accepted and invited papers, as well as a summary of the panel discussion, will be published in a separate volume of the proceedings.

The "Special Day" will be followed by two simultaneous technical workshops:

- Workshop on "Design methodologies for signal processing": 29-31 August 1996;
- Working conference on "Hardware/software co-design": 29-31 August 1996.
