A conference on "Physical metallurgy - Interfacial engineering of materials" will take place in Castelvecchio Pascoli, Italy, on 9-14 October 1996. The conference is being organized by the European Science Foundation and is supported under the Euroconference activity of the Community's specific programme for the Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR).

The conference will address issues relating to the new understanding of the fine structure of interfaces (grain boundaries, free surfaces, phase interfaces) as well as new information on localized microchemistry. In particular, it will discuss:

- The latest advances in the relation between grain boundary "type" and strength in polycrystalline metals;
- The design of two-phase interfaces in composite materials based on consideration of localized mechanics and micro-chemistry;
- The often complex interface between a coating and a metallic matrix and how this may be tailored to produce the desired adhesion;
- The oxide metal interface and how this may be engineered to improve the adherence of a protective layer.

Grants will be available for young researchers under the TMR programme. Priority will be given to candidates from less-favoured regions of the European Union, industrial researchers and women scientists. No funds are available for participants from Central and Eastern European countries.
