A two-day conference on "The legal protection of biotechnological material" will take place in London from 27 to 28 June 1996. It is organized by ESC International in association with the Sheffield Institute of Biotechnology Law and Ethics (SIBLE).

The publication of a revised European Directive on the legal protection of biotechnology has focused attention once again onto the sometimes contentious issues of the most appropriate legal protection for the results of biotechnological research. In addition to providing practical guidance as to the application of the Directive, the conference will discuss the commercial issues arising out of it and the more difficult concepts regarding the patentability of biological material such as morality.

A representative of DG XV (Internal Market and Financial Services) of the European Commission will give a speech on "The revised draft on the legal protection of technological inventions".
