A conference on the "Promotion of SMEs via new technologies offered by the Information Society" will take place in Bucharest, Romania, on 17 September 1996. It is organized by the Romanian Euro-Info Correspondence Centre.

The conference is organized in the context of the European Information Society Awareness Week. Although the Week took place from 6 to 10 May 1996, additional events are being hosted in Tunis, Bucharest and Budapest during the week of 16 to 20 September 1996.

The Bucharest conference will comprise two plenary sessions on the following:

- Romania and the Information Society. Topics will include the Bangemann report on the Information Society, the G7 global aims of the Information Society, and ways towards this society;
- A global market for SMEs. Topics will cover the role of SMEs in the Information Society, user needs for trans-European services, and new services available for promoting SMEs.

A number of parallel workshops will take place on new information services, commercial advertising, and transaction media (e-mail, multimedia, electronic trade, EDI, voice and video conferencing, etc.).
