The seventh "European symposium on the physico-chemical behaviour of atmospheric pollutants" will be held in Venice, Italy, from 2 to 4 October 1996. The symposium is being organized by the European Commission, DG XII, the Joint Research Centre's Environment Institute and the EC Science Panel on atmospheric chemistry.

The theme of this year's conference will be "The oxidizing capacity of the troposphere". Recent demonstrations have shown the important implications for air pollution problems of changes in the oxidizing capacity of the troposphere. Acidification and eutrophication of ecosystems, the concentration of photochemical oxidants and in particular the increase of tropospheric ozone, the concentration of greenhouse gases and of the substances which deplete the ozone layer are all linked to the chemistry controlling the oxidizing capacity of the troposphere.

Major topics to be addressed by the symposium will include:

- Free radicals: their role in tropospheric chemical reactions and measurement of concentration;
- Tropospheric ozone formation processes: role of biogenic and anthropogenic emissions, emission/deposition fluxes and modelling, atmospheric transport pathways and generalization of information from test sites;
- Aerosols, clouds, multiphase chemistry: aerosol formation processes, anthropogenic modification of the population of cloud condensation nuclei, aerosol characterization, ice-phase in tropospheric clouds, multiphase chemistry of organic compounds and effects of aerosols on solar radiation in the troposphere.
